Jackson Vice Mayor Presents Proclamation to Native Son

JACKSON, TENNESSEE, September 5, 2017 — On Monday, September 4, 2017, during a family
gathering, four term City Councilman and current Vice Mayor, Ernest Brooks II, District Three,
presented a proclamation to Dr. Jonathan Collins.
Jonathan Edward Collins was born and raised in Jackson, Tennessee, and received formal
education from the public schools of Jackson-Madison County, graduating from Jackson
Central Merry High School ’07. He holds a B.A. in English from Morehouse College
(Atlanta, GA) and both an M.A. in African-American Studies as well as a Ph. D. in Political
Science from UCLA (Los Angeles). He grew up in the Deliverance House of Prayer Church
under the spiritual leadership of Bishop Nathaniel Bond.
According to the Vice Mayor, “It was truly an honor to recognize the accomplishments of
not only a fellow Morehouse alumnus, but also, a Jacksonian.”
Jonathan’s research interests center on questions of racial and ethnic minority political
behavior, democratic governance and education policy. His work has been published in the
Harvard Journal of African American Policy and the Washington Post.
Currently Collins is a Presidential Postdoctoral Fellow and Visiting Scholar of Political
Science and Education at Brown University.
“I would like to thank my family, my Church and Councilman Brooks for sharing this
special day with me and for the indelible mark they have had in my development,” said Dr.
Collins.
