Black History Spotlight: Mary Black

Mary Black is the most decorated female athlete in MHS History. She is one of the most accomplished track and field athletes in Gibson Co. history. Mary competed in 5 events: Long Jump, High Jump, 200-meter Dash, 400-meter and 800-meter Relays. She advanced to the TSSAA state meet all four of her high school years (1981-84), winning 11 awards in Class A and AA: 2 First Place State titles, 3 state Runner-Up finishes, one Third Place finish, one Fourth Place finish, 3 Fifth Place finishes, and one Sixth Place finish. Available records indicate that Mary is the only athlete from Gibson Co. to win two state titles in TSSAA track and field until Andy Westbrooks did it in 2022 and 2023. She also set the female long jump record of 18 ft. 1 inch at the Brownsville, TN Relays while in high school. She was inducted into the Gibson County Sports Hall of Fame in 2022.
