Hometown Schools Plan to Hit High Marks at the High Cotton 5k/1k

Fayette County Public Schools prepare for another huge show of support for Fayette Cares by registering hundreds of teachers, students, and parents in the High Cotton 5k/1k on Saturday, September 9th.   Their goal is to exceed prior year totals of nearly 250 registrants.

Last year every school in the Fayette County Public Schools system participated in a competitive team registration challenge.  Fayette-Ware Comprehensive High School led the race with the largest numbers, followed closely by Buckley-Carpenter Elementary.  Teachers, students, and parents showed school spirit as they ran, walked, and strolled in tutus, face paint, group shirts, and other fun displays of team pride.

“Our hometown schools lead the pack when it comes to serving their communities,” says Fayette County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Marlon King.  Dr. King applauds the three decade history of charitable work provided by Fayette Cares.   “What better way to strengthen our hometowns than by supporting a local charity that has helped thousands of our neighbors in need?”

Participants of all abilities are welcome to run, walk, or stroll the course which weaves through historic Somerville.  Those with a competitive streak will love the chip timed results within minutes of crossing the finish line. With over 100 awards in age and gender groups many 5k participants will take home the popular cotton bale trophies.  All 1k Fun Run participants receive a medallion.

Post-race fun continues when the awards are presented at the Fayette County Chamber Cotton Festival.  The festival offers family friendly events including live music, inflatables, games, a car show, food, shopping and more.

Fayette County Public Schools are among the many Fayette Cares sponsors who join in building strong hometowns.  Others include Memphis Contract Packaging, Somerville Animal Hospital, Central Distributors, City Fitness, Cora Bella's Dance Company, Costco, Fayette County Chamber of Commerce, Karen Love of Kaizen Realty, Print Solutions, The Seam, Somerville First United Methodist Church, Tri-State Printing, and Trustmark Bank.

Those interested in running or walking in the 5k/1k will want to benefit from the early registration discount which ends on August 23rd.  To register or learn about student discounts, visit FayetteCares.org/5k or call (901) 465-3802 x 223. Fayette Cares is a United Way Agency.
