Mid West Tennessee Genealogy Meeting

The Mid-West Tennessee Genealogical Society will meet Tuesday, August 8, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in the Program Center of the Jackson-Madison County Library at 433 East Lafayette Street in Jackson.

Dr. Kenneth Newman will be doing a presentation on: The Story of Delores Ballard.

Delores Ballard, a West Tennessee treasure, was a senior writer at The Jackson Sun for 27 years before becoming the Public Information Officer for the City of Jackson. She was the author of Barbeque and Butterbeans (And Other Essentials of Life), a collection of her newspaper columns between 1987 and 1991, which was published in 1992. The program entitled “Delores Ballard…Jackson’s Own Emily Dickinson” will be presented by Dr. Ken Newman, Delores’ senior English teacher at North Side High School. The presentation will highlight special memories of Delores, as well as readings from some of her essays and poems written for her senior English class.

Anyone interested in genealogy is invited to attend the meeting. Annual membership dues are $20 and include quarterly issues of “Family Findings” with West Tennessee genealogical stories and research tips. Questions should be sent to
