NAACP hosts forum for Jackson City Council candidates

While the participation was disappointing, the forum for Jackson City Council candidates was lively, informative and welcoming.

Candidates included

Larry Lowrance, Tara Skinner, Harrell Carter, NAACP President, Candice Busby, J P Stovall and Frank McMeen 

The Jackson-Madison County NAACP branch held its second round if candidate forums at the local office Thursday evening.

Moderator Mr Harrell Carter welcomed the participants as Pastor and district one candidate J P Stovall opened with a prayer.

Only 5 candidates showed up for the forum which was talked about during the debate.  Several citizens in attendance asked key questions and namely the continued neglect of the citizens and services in East Jackson.

It was also suggested this new council approve conducting half of their monthly meetings during evening hours so more citizens can attend the meetings.  

Affordable housing was brought up by candidates and those in attendance several times.  Councilman Richard Donnell went into say that “affordable housing is a misleading phrase and only means those with adequate money and resources can actually afford a home” it was talked about in length the need for some type of assistance to people which would enable people to get into their own home and be more productive tax paying citizens said Donnell”

Also citizens were concerned about continued plague of litter and trash being dumped and not being collected in the city.  All candidates pledged to start to work immediately in working as a cooperative council to accomplish what is best for the City of Jackson. 

The City of Jackson municipal election will be held May 2, 2023 .
