Time to nominate for Sterling Awards 2020

The Sterling Awards 2020: 20 Most Influential Women in West Tennessee, sponsored by Jackson Area Business and Professional Women, will be held on March 31, 2020 on Equal Pay Day. The Sue Shelton White Award and the Outstanding Woman Military Veteran Award will also be presented.

“Each year, I think we have the best group of winners, and every year, I’m impressed again with the quality of these outstanding women,” said Wanda Stanfill, Sterling Awards director. “These women choose to live their lives with courageous commitment to helping their communities thrive. We hope that our West Tennesseans continue honoring these women through nominations. The deadline is Jan. 24 to submit nominations.”

Jackson Area Business and Professional Women, a non-partisan organization, was originally founded 100 years ago in a meeting held at the Carnegie Library in Jackson, Tenn. The focus is on education for business women and legislative action.

Since the Sterling Awards’ launch in 2010, 20 women have been honored each year, chosen by a Board of Selectors from around 80 nominations annually. Nominations are due by noon, Jan. 24. The Board of Selectors will meet Jan. 26, and the winners will be notified Jan 27-31. The judges read through many pages citing awards, leadership and volunteerism.

The attributes that qualify a woman to win a Sterling Award include action for the betterment of all, which is key in West Tennessee communities. These winners have taken their skills – their intelligence, intuition and perseverance -- and worked to attain great goals. These women shape their towns and communities with public policy, fundraising, government leadership, involvement in education, healthcare and the arts.

The winners are outstanding in these categories: government and public service; small business/entrepreneur; business and technology; service (community/non-profit); education; labor/manufacturing; healthcare, legal and other fields.

The nomination form can be found online at jacksonareabpw.com. Prospective nominators will also find a list of previous winners from 2010-2019 on the website.
