Jackson-Madison County Library will Rock All Summer Long

Summer Library Program Kicks Off in June 2

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Jackson-Madison County Library will rock all summer long as it kicks off its summer library program June 2 with a special registration event beginning at 11 a.m. and performance by Elvis impersonator Brian Lee Howell at 1 p.m. at the Main Library.

The library will explore the theme, “Libraries Rock” with special music and rock themed programs and events for all ages throughout June and July. Summer programs are funded by the Friends of the Jackson-Madison County Library and supported by its ongoing book sale at both the Main Library and North Branch.

“The community is in for a treat this summer,” said Dinah Harris, library director. “We expanded our program from six weeks to eight weeks to include all these fantastic events for kids, teens, adults and families. Our team works very hard to create programs that not only encourage reading, but that inspire creativity and provide opportunities for the community to learn something new.”

Every Tuesday at 2 p.m., kids and teens are invited to an alternating series of programs that will feature a combined sing-along movie one week, and a separate kid show and teen program the next. These family-friendly movies include “Coco,” “Hairspray the Musical,” “The Wiz Live,” and “Sing.” Kid shows will include such favorites as Bob Tarter and the Natural History Educational Company of the Midsouth presenting “Animal Sounds, Songs & Symphony,” an interactive art program with Rich Davis, a performance by Bright Star Theatre entitled, “Freedom Songs: The Music of Black History” and singer/songwriter Jacob Johnson.

Teens and adults are invited to two special programs in June that include a songwriting workshop taught via distance learning by an artist from the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville, as well as a music listening party to encourage teens and adults to share their favorite tunes with each other. In July, teens will design their own album covers and create a soundtrack for their life, as well as play a minute-to-win-it style game called “Sing or Dare!”

Wednesdays at 2 p.m. will feature “Crafternoons” for all ages with weekly craft projects such as upcycling CDs, watercolor painting and making guitars out of cardboard.

As part of the library’s STEM LEAP program (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, Learn, Explore and Play), kids ages eight to 16 are encouraged to sign up for the ThursdaySummer STEM program in June that will feature some of the library’s newest robotics and coding tools, along with other hands-on STEM learning activities. Preregistration is required before June 7 as space is limited. Parents or guardians can email jmclkids@gmail.com to register. Thursdays in July will be open to all ages for summer games.

Fridays at 1 p.m. is the “Movies that Rock” film series with such classics as “Jailhouse Rock” and The Who’s “Tommy” rock opera, along with others such as “Pitch Perfect” and “Pretty in Pink.”

In addition to the kick-off event, the Library will host a Rock, Paper, Scissors tournament at 11 a.m. on Sat., June 16. Individuals and teams are encouraged to compete for trophies and prizes. Adults can take a walk down memory lane at “The 80’s Rocked Show and Tell” event from 11 a.m. – noon on Sat., July 21 to share mementos and pictures, with plenty of laughs. The summer program will then conclude with a fun all-ages 80’s dance party from noon – 2 p.m. on Sat., July 28. Wear your raddest 80’s attire and rock out to chart-topping hits, including a visit by Pete the Cat!

Registration forms, challenge sheets and detailed calendars will be available starting June 2 at the kickoff event, and afterwards at the Main Library and North Branch circulation desks. There is also an online registration option and materials for download available online at www.jmclibrary.org. Those completing the summer library program challenges can return their forms to be registered for prizes, and everyone who returns a form will receive a coupon for free ice-cream from Dairy Queen. Children and teens will also receive a coupon for a free student admission to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville.

All events are free. Children 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult at all programs.
