Walk Across Tennessee: A fitness journey for everyone

It’s time to register your group of four friends, co-workers, or family members to get moving more during the eight-week Walk Across Tennessee physical activity challenge. Four people make up the teams for 2018. This year’s challenge runs March 12 to May 6, but registration is now available and closes March 9, 2018.

“Every journey starts with a first step. Walk Across Tennessee is an opportunity for couch potatoes to get started with physical activity. It’s also a time when fit members or our community can push themselves to do a little more,” said Dr. Amy Elizer, UT Extension family and consumer science agent. “The purpose of the program is helping people get into the habit of being physically active reap the health benefits.”

“One of the first questions I’m asked is if we actually walk across the state,” said Elizer. “No, we don’t take a trip, but participants log their mileage along with team members. Depending on the team’s goal, they may walk 500 miles or more during the eight-week physical activity challenge.” It is also important to recognize that this is intentional physical activity beyond a person’s routine.
