Gamma Psi’s Third Annual Literacy Scholarship Luncheon
The National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. Gamma Psi Chapter held it’s third
annual Literacy Scholarship Luncheon at Union University in the Carl Grant Events
Center with Mr. Ahmad Hicks, WBBJ Sports Anchor, as Master of Ceremonies.
The speaker for the program was Mrs. Ashley Brooks Wise, two time first runner
up for Miss Tennessee, speaking on “Tools for Raising the Bar in Support of
Education”. She also performed a musical selection on the piano. Mrs. Wise was
presented the Key to the City by City of Jackson Councilman, Mr. Ernest Brooks, II.
Other participants on the program were Alexandria Carney performing a vocal
selection and Hudson King, presenting on “The Dream: Past, Present, and
Future.”
Students who won the essay contest from writing on the topic “What was Dr.
Martin Luther King’s American Dream & How Does this Relate to You?” presented
their essays on the program. High school recipient Teaira Williams, a graduating
senior from Fayette-Ware High School, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship.
Seventh grade recipient Shelby Leigh McLendon, West-Bemis Middle School, was
awarded a Tablet and a monetary gift card. Sixth grade recipient Dexter Keylon
Turner, II, Parkway Middle School, was also awarded a Tablet and a monetary gift
card. It is the sorority’s aim to promote and develop literacy skills and encourage
existing ones through the literacy essay contest.
Attendees viewed a video presentation on the Gamma Psi Chapter’s involvement
and volunteering in the community with programs that enhance literacy. The
chapter has developed a STEM literacy program for the Jackson Boy’s and Girl’s
Club, volunteered with TEAM Read, and at Nova’s preschool program. Gamma
Psi’s Youth Group, Xinos, served as hostesses. s. Patricia Taylor and Ms. Roslyn
Wilson were the event’s co-chairs.
