UT MARTIN FALL ENROLLMENT INCREASE INCLUDES MORE FRESHMEN, TRANSFERS
MARTIN, Tenn. — The University of Tennessee at Martin has recorded its first fall
enrollment increase since 2010 by reaching 6,800 students for the 2017 fall semester. The total
includes 1,048 freshmen, the largest freshman class since fall 2014. Final numbers include students
enrolled at the main campus, online students and students attending the university’s five centers in
Jackson, Parsons, Ripley, Selmer and Somerville.
Total enrollment is up 1.4 percent – or 95 students – compared to the 2016 fall enrollment of
6,705 students. First-time freshmen increased 10.8 percent – or 102 students – compared to 946 first-
time freshmen enrolled the previous fall. For the second consecutive year, the average ACT
composite score for incoming freshmen remains at 23, and the high school grade point average of
3.54 is up from 3.53 for last year’s entering class. Freshman-to- sophomore retention increased for the
fourth consecutive year by reaching a university record 76.1 percent. Other increases include
transfers (+66), dual enrollment (+71) and graduate students (+16).
“I’m very pleased with the total enrollment, which includes increases in first-time freshmen
and transfers,” said Dr. Keith Carver, who is in his first fall as UT Martin chancellor. “But I’m
equally pleased with the record freshman-to- sophomore retention rate and the great preparation of
incoming students reflected in the average ACT score. Our recruiting efforts are bringing in qualified
students, and our faculty and staff are creating a nurturing environment that is helping our students
succeed.”
The university’s full-time equivalency also increased 1 percent – or 54 students – which is the
total number of student credit hours divided by 15 for undergraduate students and 12 for graduate
students. The FTE is the number used by the state to determine funding for public higher education
institutions.
“The Tennessee Promise is also starting to bring more students to UT Martin,” Carver added.
“We expect this trend to continue as we see more students enter the university who have taken
advantage of the program.” The Tennessee Promise began in the 2015-16 academic year and is both a
scholarship and a mentoring program focused on increasing the number of students who attend
college in Tennessee. UT Martin announced a partnership Aug. 23 at Jackson State Community
College that will benefit Tennessee Promise students who pursue a four-year degree at UT Martin
through the university’s Elam Transfer Promise scholarships.
The university also increased access to its programs and services when the new UT Martin
Somerville Center opened in August for fall semester classes.
